About Alfa Romeo

Established: 1910

Alfa Romeo is an Italian automobile construction company founded on June 24, 1910, in Milan. Since 1986, this car manufacturer has been part of the Fiat SpA group and since February 2007 has been a division of Fiat Group Automobiles SpA which brings together all the car brands of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles 3 group. It was previously owned by the Italian State, through its public holding company IRI, from 1933 to 1986.

The incorporation of the company takes place Strada al Portello, in Milan, in an area in the era of the land called Portello, where there was an inn frequented by the rare motorists of the beginning of the century. The ALFA brand, an acronym of Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, means " Lombard limited company of automobile constructions ". This name is chosen because it takes up the first letter of the Greek alphabet and makes it possible to underline the beginning of new activity in automobile construction, that of cars of a sporting nature. The company was created after the takeover by a group of Lombard industrialists of a small structure present in automobile construction, belonging to Frenchman Alexandre Darracq. The latter had attempted, without a result, an industrial adventure in the Kingdom of Italy.

Since its origin and its first logo, the company wants to recall its links with its city of origin: on one side the Visconti snake (the famous Biscione ), on the other the red cross on a white background, the symbol of the Lombard capital, Milan. The 250 employees from the resumption of Darracq activity are all integrated into the new company which has set itself the ambitious objective of manufacturing 300 cars per year.

The new millennium begins under the best auspices for Alfa Romeo. The new Alfa 147 model wins the title "Car of the Year 2001". That same year, the sports version of the Alfa 156, the 156 GTA, was marketed, including a series reserved for competitions.

In 2003, the second series of the large road Alfa 166 was presented and competed with the German sedans Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. It remains in production until December 2007. The same year, a coupe derived from the Alfa 156 was born: the Alfa Romeo GT. The Coupé GTV and Spider adopt the new V6 3.2  L which, combined with their excellent aerodynamics makes the Alfa Romeo road faster, reaching 255  km / h without speed limiter or correcting stability.

At the beginning of 2005, Alfa presented the successor to the 156. It will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show under the name "159".

As for the 156, the 159 will be produced in sedan and station wagon. Its dynamic design and its flowing lines leave no one indifferent and its commercial success is significant. Even today, the 159 is a value on the second-hand market.

At the end of 2005, a new sports coupe was launched: the Alfa Romeo Brera, the fruit of a style study by Giorgetto Giugiaro, already the author of the 159 from which it derived and many other cars. Presented at the Geneva Motor Show, it replaces the Coupé GTV. In March 2006, the Alfa Romeo Spider (spider version of the Brera), designed by Pininfarina, is presented at the Geneva Motor Show.

In october 2007, the series limited to 500 copies of the super sports Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is marketed. Equipped with a V8 4.7  L Original Maserati developing 450  hp , propulsion, it may reach 292  km / h and carries out 0 to 100 km / h in 4.2  s .

In june 2008, Alfa Romeo presents its latest small one, the ZAR 955 project. Long nicknamed "Junior", it is actually called MiTo . MiTo means Mi for Milano (Milan), abbreviated acronym of the province, which also appears on the license plates, where it was designed, and To for Torino (Turin), where it is manufactured, or simply because Alfa Romeo is a myth and it had to be remembered ( Mito in Italian means "Myth"). The MiTo is equipped with a wide range of engines ranging from 1.4 MPI of 78  hp to 1.4 TB ( MultiAir ) TCT of 170  hppassing by a 1.6 JTD diesel of 120  hp .

Alfa Romeo had promised that the replacement for the Alfa 147, the future 149 , would be ready at the start of 2009. It suffered some delays due to the priority given to the MiTo and the release of the new Lancia Delta, and released finally in early 2010 under the name of Giulietta .

The Alfa Romeo 4C , a two-seater coupé with a central engine, is available fromSeptember 2013. It is equipped with a 1,742  cm 3  TBi all-aluminum engine which develops 240  hp and brings it to more than 250 km / h . The 4C aims to compete with the Lotus Elise and the Porsche Cayman.

The May 6 , 2014, Fiat announces an investment of five billion euros until 2018 to revive Alfa Romeo, with eight new models planned.

The June 24 , 2015, Sergio Marchionne , managing director of the FCA group, presents the new Alfa Romeo Giulia in Quadrifoglio version equipped with a 510  hp twin-turbo V6 engine derived from the V8 F154 Ferrari  (en) amputated by 2 cylinders and developed in collaboration with Ferrari engineers  .
