A Billionaire Building The World's Biggest Yacht To Save The Ocean

Kiel Inge Røkke, a Norwegian billionaire has started building the REV (Research Shipping Ship) which is aimed to be the largest yacht in the world. However, the yacht’s purpose isn’t just for sailing. It will be operated independently by the WWF, the largest conservation organization in the world, whose main goal is, along with Røkke, to preserve the waters by collecting up to 5 tons of plastic from the ocean each day.

Røkke started working as a fisherman at the age of 18 and eventually established one of the world’s leading fishing companies. It is no doubt that the sea gave him so much that it’s time he finally gives something back to it.

In an interview with Aftenposten, Røkke spoke about the driving force behind the ginormous yacht he’s building:

“The sea has given me great opportunities. I’m grateful for that. I want to give back to society the bulk of what I’ve earned. This ship is a part of that. The idea of such a ship has evolved over many years, but the plans have become concrete in the past year.”

The REV is 182 meters in length and is capable of conducting environmental monitoring up to 20,000 ft. deep in the ocean. The yacht will be completed in 2020.
